Surviving the Waves and Corals

Oh Nooo!

Tourists screamed horribly when the boat was fighting against the killer waves that struck us after we left Maxima at 4pm last July 17,2011.It was an hour of resisting the waves, bouncing and warming ourselves from the extreme cold air while sailing Samal-Davao sea.

Oh Yeess!

A tourist answered the crowd whenever they say ‘Oh No’ trying to enliven the crowd since tension was felt inside the boat. I even told the ‘driver’ to go back to the resort because my friends, in group hug, were scared already while the 3-meter waves keep on splashing us.

There were smiles when a passenger cracked jokes to lighten up our feelings but mild panic has drawn to each face. I told my partner “ If something bad happens, don’t think of anyone or of me, save yourself first, OK?” I supposed to comfort her but I prepared her to possible accident. She was scared with trembling voice while praying. “ Let’s meet on the open sea “ I added.

My seatmate recorded a video of herself telling “ This is how big the waves are striking us but the driver has no plan to go back. We are all scared here and I love you everyone”. That made me weak for awhile. Is this the end of the devianttraveler.com? Lots of imaginary scenarios popped up on my mind. A series of questions to the omnipotent God.

Why us, when there are corrupt solons who made this land miserable? Why us when there are leaders who enjoy PCSO’s grace? Why us when there are killers who took journalists lives just to retain his power in Maguindano? Why us? Then I slowly realize how selfish I was. Life is a game that must be played. In every play there is a winner and there is a loser. But I didn’t allow myself to lose the game. I prayed and I assumed everyone was calling the presence of the Lord while the boat was in trouble.

There was a sigh of relief to everyone when we saw Sta.Ana wharf. That time the waves started to be friendly. Our feet were excited to step on the land. I could hear their expression of gratitude to God for leading us the way. It felt like we were experiencing EXODUS.

At Sta Ana wharf, I was not able to get a chance to the ‘captain’. I just wanted to share my opinion and suggestion to their service. 1st, it is, I think, an SOP to orient the passengers when trouble is felt where accident could possibly happen. It is their duty to comfort us by providing us the easiest way to survive if accident would occur. 2nd, no one from their group talked to the crowd to relax the way pilots do during bad times. No one from their worried and sad faced staff excelled an effort to remind us that life vests are available or even told us that for our safety for possible danger, you may wear your life vest now.

That simple marketing service has a BIG impact to tourists that at least give us hope that the resort really cares. As one of the tourists, I am entitled with my opinion and suggestion for better service.

I can’t count the times I have visited Samal but that was my first time to experience such waves splashing like killers!

THE CORALS

No doubt, the Island Garden City of Samal is rich in terms of preservation of marine lives. In fairness, Maxima also known as the home of abyss did not frustrate my wholeday vacation.

While people were engrossed with the resort’s slides I preferred to spend time in the ‘abyss’. Together with my underwater cam I got a chance to capture untouched corals while fishes in different colors enjoy the nature’s gift.

With no gears at all, I tried myself to at least get up close to corals that beautifully sprouting down under. I decided to just hold my breath than to rent a 4000 per hour scuba diving as stated in the resort’s amenities. Diving at 4 to 7 feet is enough for me to capture marine lives standing like pillars and looks like dome of a big big mansion standing 120 feet deep.

While in the blue water where oxygen is not available to humans, I remembered one of the NatGeo’s episodes televised last week abo

ut the plan of the western countries to build community underwater by creating oxygenized mega structures with malls, rooms, parks and even coffee shops. An exploration to answer overpopulation in terrestrial living. The 3D rendition is amazing. Imagine yourself migrating underwater.

Homes in the Abyss. Well, that would be the greatest inventions made on earth. Life would be easy. No SUV, Pajero and no Porsche but definitely there would be bishops—good bishops and hopefully, the PCSO will do clean charity works down under. If this would really happen for the next more years, I pray that justice system may also be serving real justice the way it should be. Well, these are just sorts of my crazy thoughts while going in and out at Maxima’s deep blue sea.

Finally, I have learned that it is not wise to travel by the sea nowadays while the weather keeps on pouring water on earth unexpectedly causing us too much stress and tension. A weather that can trigger a wiseman’s hand to punch another wise man. This weekend experience really taught me many crazy thoughts that somehow matter.
